Chapter 18
McCarthy and Reddick introduced themselves and shook the parole officer’s hand, explaining their situation to him quickly.
“I’m glad to be of assistance. I guess I’ll just give you the facts and you can take it from there,” Parole Officer Roberts began. “At approximately two-sixteen in the morning, a Benard Parker and Samuel Baxter were admitted into Clark County Hospital. It appeared at first glance that they had been on the losing end of a fist fight. But my kid Parker’s nose had been broken, and his jaw in two places. He swallowed three of his teeth and had several deep lacerations that required stitches. Baxter made out a little better, I guess you could say. He got clubbed in the head with a blunt object that we’re assuming is a gun. He has a nasty gash in the back of his head and a huge knot. More than just a hairline fracture, that’s for sure. A major concussion and he keeps slipping in and out of consciousness. We all just naturally assumed they got jumped. Local street kids going to war with each other, you know how it is. But come to find out the usual victimizers became the victims, and it appears that they had been robbed.”
“And how did you find this out? Parker and Baxter gave you this info?” McCarthy asked.
“Fuck no! Parker’s ass is sitting in the county jail as we speak. I violated his ass!” the parole officer announced with authority. “He wasn’t supposed to be in that kind of neighborhood or atmosphere, and he violated his curfew. While he was in the hospital I gave him a piss test, and it came back hotter than a prostitute’s panties on an August day,” Roberts said, erupting in laughter. His pale face turned pink as he slapped his thigh.
McCarthy thought the man’s laugh was very aggravating. It reminded him of that guy’s laugh from the Revenge of the Nerds movies.
McCarthy and Reddick stared at each other, then back at Roberts, not seeing what the joke was. The PO noticed that he was the only one laughing, so he stopped, regained his composure, and continued, “Baxter is also in custody. We found thirty-three bags of heroin in the front of his long johns. Neither one of them are cooperating with us. This is really no surprise to us. Plus my kid’s jaw is broken and wired shut so you can already imagine he’s being pretty closemouthed about the whole situation.” The large man exploded in another fit of laughter. His extra-tight Dockers slacks looked as if they were about to bust open at any second.
“Closemouthed about the situation,” Roberts repeated as tears squeezed out of his eyes. “I love it. Aww, man, I love it,” he finished, wiping his eyes.
Reddick looked as if he was ready to slap the shit out of him. “So if they didn’t give you the information, then who did?” Reddick asked, trying to keep his temper and attitude in check.
“Uh, huh? Oh, okay, well, here’s where things get a little interesting.
